Bailers are used to take surface and groundwater samples in boreholes and wells. They remain open until lowered to a chosen depth. When the bailer is drawn back up, the weight of the water seals the bailer base. Several of thse bailers also come with a check valve at the top to isolate the samples taken at specific depths.
